The design shows Mary after her release from prison, a couple of days before her death on Christmas Day 1910. She wears the Votes for Women sash and the Hunger Striker’s medal. She is carrying copies of the suffragette newspaper Votes for Women that she regularly sold in Brighton and Hove. It is the November 1910 edition which reports on the terrible events of Black Friday, when she and many other women were injured by police violence outside Parliament. Three women died as a result of that violence, of which she was the first.

Matthew Gallagher

It is with huge sadness that we announce the very sudden death of Matthew Gallagher on 29th December, aged 46. Matthew was a director of Bowley and Gallagher Funeral Directors, Preston Road. Along with Paul Bowley he brought a refreshing and different insight into how he thought the modern day funeral directors premises should look and feel. He has certainly left his mark within this family business with our bright modern office, using colour and furnishings that compliment the building and company use.

SPELDHURST CHURCH & HEVER CASTLE

Posted in 7 Directory Community, Preston Pages Community, The Post Community on Jul 01, 2018

After leaving Brighton we will travel to Speldhurst near Tonbridge to see St Mary’s Church. This is at least the 3rd church built on the same site and contains a complete set of stain glass windows designed by the famous pre-Raphaelite artists Burne Jones and William Morris. For those who have been to see St Michael’s in Brighton you would be familiar with their and other pre-Raphaelite artist’s work. We will have a conducted tour by one of the church’s members. Hopefully we will be able to get a coffee in the George and Dragon pub opposite the Church and then we will have lunch at the Wheatshief at Bough Beech near Hever Castle. The pub dates back to Tudor times but was updated in the Georgian period.

Showing toy trains: why do we do it?

Posted in Preston Pages Community, The Post Community on Feb 01, 2018

I blame my father for starting it way back in 1951, when he visited Gamages of Holborn, now no more, but famous then for its toy department and model railway. His mission was to buy me, his train-fixated son, a train set for my third birthday. He chose a British made electrically powered set by Trix. My interest in Trix has somehow survived through all the other pre-occupations of childhood, growing up, adult life, and now retirement, though there were long periods when that interest was very much on the back burner.

Have you heard of the Older People’s Council? We are a group of older people elected by over 60-year olds in the city and we are there to inform the Brighton and Hove City Council about the issues that concern older people. We check through proposals and budgets and campaign for action if we feel older people are being treated unfairly. We also act similarly with health and care issues in the city. We do this by meeting with Councillors, Council Officers and NHS/CCG managers to put our views across.

Stumped?!

Springfield Road residents are appealing for help to protect and replace dying conker trees. The road has been tree lined since it was built, but with age and climate change a canker bug has meant some have to be felled, with several others on the danger list. With council budget cuts there was no assurance these would not be lost forever without community action to assist securing the sites and replanting for the future. Residents association Vice chair Edward explained:

All Saints’ Church Patcham, Brighton, BN1 8YE

Posted in Preston Pages Community, The Post Community on Aug 01, 2017

All Saints occupies a prominent position at the northern end of Church Hill in Patcham Conservation Area. It once comprised a small downland village, forming a distinct settlement to the north of Brighton. The present church has a history dating back to Saxon times, (possibly as early as the 700s). A church is known to have stood on this site since before the compiling of the Domesday Book in which Patcham was registered as Piceham when the village was valued at £80 in 1086 AD. There are striking similarities with other Sussex Downland churches nearby, such as Pyecombe and Clayton, in terms of construction and overall design. It is built in flint, widely used for building construction in Sussex in the middle ages, with sections of the present building dating from as early as the 12th century. In the nave of the church and positioned over the chancel arch is a rare 13th century Last Judgement or Doom Painting, whitewashed over at the time of the purges of the Reformation then rediscovered during renovations in 1880-1883.
